Logi Options+ alternatives for Mac
Logi Options+ is free, but it is a large app, some features need a Logitech account, and in January 2026 it stopped launching on Macs for several days when Logitech's signing certificate expired. If you only want your mouse buttons to do what you tell them, a smaller app can do the job. Here are the five we would look at, including our own.
At a glance
| App | Price | Source code | Logitech-only buttons (gesture, DPI, SmartShift) | Per-app settings | Account needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upright | Free | Open source (MIT) | Yes, over HID++ | Yes | No |
| BetterMouse | $7.99 once, 7-day trial | Closed | Yes, on supported Logitech mice | Yes | No |
| Mac Mouse Fix | $2.99 once, 30-day trial | Source on GitHub | Not all; its site says it can't see every button on mice built for Logitech's software | Yes | No |
| SteerMouse | $19.99 once, 30-day trial | Closed | Partly; works with generic buttons | Yes | No |

Upright
Upright is a small native menu-bar app that talks to Logitech mice directly over HID++ 2.0, the protocol Logitech's own software uses. That lets it take over the buttons generic remappers often can't see: the top DPI button, the gesture button and the SmartShift button. Among the free alternatives on this page, it's the only one that does.
What you can do with it:
- Map any button to almost anything. Mission Control, App Exposé, switching Spaces, Back and Forward, tabs, media keys, screenshots, Lock Screen, copy and paste, any keyboard shortcut you record, or open an app, open a URL or run a Shortcuts.app shortcut by name.
- Gestures on any divertable button. Click, plus hold and move up, down, left or right: five actions from one button. The mouse reports raw movement while you hold it, so the cursor stays put.
- Per-app profiles. Keep one global setup and let single buttons do something else while a given app is in front.
- Several mice at once, over any mix of cable, Bluetooth, Unifying, Bolt or Nano receivers. Each model has its own setup, and you can prepare one before the mouse arrives.
- Pointer speed (DPI) presets. Cycle through them from a button or jump to a fixed speed, and pick one to apply whenever a mouse reconnects.
- Easy-Switch from a button, to move the mouse to another paired computer.
- Battery in the menu bar, with low-battery alerts at 15% and 5% for each mouse.
- Scrolling your way. Reverse the mouse wheel without touching the trackpad setting, and change its speed.
- Export and import every mapping and profile as one file.
- Leaves nothing behind. Buttons are only borrowed while Upright runs; quit it or power-cycle the mouse and everything is back to factory behavior. No account, no analytics, no telemetry.
Honest limits: it only works with Logitech HID++ mice, and only the MX Vertical has been tested on real hardware so far. The other 22 models are built from published device data. It isn't notarized yet, so macOS asks you to confirm the first launch.
BetterMouse
The most complete paid option if you want Logitech-specific settings without Options+. It configures DPI, onboard profiles, vendor buttons and the MX Master thumb wheel on supported Logitech mice, and adds smooth scrolling and gestures for any mouse. $7.99 for life, five activations per license.
Mac Mouse Fix
Best for making any mouse feel like a trackpad: smooth scrolling and trackpad-style gestures such as Mission Control. Version 2 stays free; the current version is $2.99 after a 30-day trial that only counts days you use it. Its own site says it can't recognize every button on mice designed for Logitech's software.
SteerMouse
The long-standing option, around for many years. It remaps buttons, wheels and chords on most mice, with per-app settings. $19.99 for a new license after a 30-day trial.
LinearMouse
Free and open source. Strong on scrolling (direction, speed, acceleration) and per-device, per-app profiles, with button remapping to shortcuts and system actions. It doesn't claim Logitech vendor-button support.
Which one should you pick?
- You have an MX Master, MX Vertical, Lift or MX Anywhere and want its special buttons back, free: Upright.
- You want Logitech-specific settings and don't mind paying: BetterMouse.
- Your mouse isn't a Logitech, or you mostly want smooth scrolling: Mac Mouse Fix or LinearMouse.
- You use several brands and want one mature app: SteerMouse.
FAQ
Do I need to uninstall Logi Options+ first?
Yes, quit and remove it. Two apps diverting the same buttons will fight each other.
Will my mouse settings change permanently?
Not with Upright: it diverts buttons only while it runs and writes nothing to the mouse. Turning the mouse off and on restores factory behavior.
Does Upright collect data?
No. It has no account, no analytics and no telemetry, and it doesn't phone home.
Does Upright work with non-Logitech mice?
No. It only speaks Logitech's HID++ protocol. For other mice, look at LinearMouse, Mac Mouse Fix or SteerMouse.
